Don’t Ignore The “Blocking And Tackling” When Starting Your Business

Bean There, Done That
Monthly Bookkeeping Wisdom From Your Friendly Bean-Counter

Suppose you decided to start a football team, and you figured you could get away without worrying about tackling.

After all, you’re busy, you don’t have time for every little detail, and how important is tackling for a football team anyway? And who needs blocking, too, for that matter? Just heave the ball down the field, score 100 points a game, and the “little stuff” won’t matter.

In this scenario, some would say you’re “neglecting the fundamentals.” Others might say you run the risk of not being successful, and of losing most (if not all) of your team’s games. Still others might simply say you’re an idiotic ding-dong.

(Not to your face, maybe, but they’re thinking it. I’m just saying.)

Now, before you write that harsh response, no, I did not have any particular local football team in mind. I’m sure our local gridiron teams do have the importance of blocking and tackling firmly in mind, even if it doesn’t seem that way sometimes.

I’m just using this totally-made-up scenario to illustrate the importance of focusing on the fundamentals if you want to start your enterprise on the road to success and victory.

And so it is with business.

If you’re starting a business, you want to start it right, and that brings us to the subject of this month’s Bean, which is (of course) the fundamental importance of professional bookkeeping.

As far as you know, some studies show that businesses that start off with the right bookkeeping in place are approximately five million times more likely to be successful than a football team that doesn’t bother with blocking and/or tackling.

And here’s why:

  • Accurate record-keeping. At some point, somebody (a vendor, an employee, the IRS, somebody) is gonna ask you whether you paid something or other, and whether you can prove it. If you have a Friendly Bean Counter (FBC) working on your behalf, you’ll have accurate records of everything your business does, financially speaking. NOT having accurate records would be like playing football without a scoreboard, or without anybody keeping score at all, for that matter. “Did we score a touchdown last time?’ “I don’t know, I thought you were keeping track.” “I don’t remember.” Fumble!
  • Decision support. If you’re coaching your team, and you see on the scoreboard that you’re down by four with three minutes left, this information might lead you to the wise decision NOT to kick a field goal when you really need to score a touchdown. Likewise, a business owner who has access to up-to-date financial information can make much smarter decisions about marketing efforts, production and other facets of operations, whether to launch a new service line, etc.
  • Financing. When you go to the bank to get a new loan for expansion, or to increase your current line of credit… or when you’re seeking financing from a private investor or partner… they’re gonna want to know how your business is doing, and they’ll want to see accurate books. Saying “I think we’re doing okay” is not going to be a sufficient response to a request for information from a bank or an investor.
  • Taxes. I don’t need to point out the importance of strong bookkeeping when it comes time to pony-up for The Tax Man. The IRS pretty-much insists on it.
  • Your time. If you’re running a business, you have enough to do! If the bookkeeping is being handled by your FBC, you have more time available for running your enterprise. You might even get to sleep sometimes!

In short, if you don’t have the time and energy to focus on “every little detail,” that’s the best reason to call DK/RK Services and get your FBC on the case. With more than five decades of combined experience, your FBC can handle the “blocking and tackling” every business needs to be successful.

Howl-dy! I’m Sadie.

Sadie’s Paw Prints

Paw Licking? Rolling On The Carpet?
Your Dog Might Be Telling You Something’s Missing

Sadie here. Dottie’s my faithful human companion. And in this edition, it’s time to discuss the importance of nutrition for your dog.

We all want to live long, energetic lives. And what we eat goes a long way in determining our chances of doing just that.

It often amazes me how you two-leggers will research every ingredient, read every label, and do your best to get smart about the stuff YOU eat… but when it comes to dog food, it seems like any ol’ sack of kibble will do. And the cheaper, the better.

I’m not saying you should feed us fresh, raw organic meats and veggies… oh wait, come to think of it, that would be delightful.

But if you don’t have the time or budget to offer that kind of doggie menu, you should know there are some great dog food products available today that come a lot closer to giving us what we need nutrition-wise than does the cheapest kibble at the store.

Since we don’t speak English (we find it primitive), we have other ways of telling you to “beef up” our menu. When we roll on the carpet, or incessantly lick our paws, you might think these are “cute” behaviors, but they’re not normal. We need better food.

And if we refuse to eat, that’s a real red flag. Time to talk to the vet about a feeding approach that will keep us healthier, and help us live longer.

Woof!

Non-Profit Spotlight

Cloudies Need Help,
And Kids In Tanzania Could Use A Drink Of Water

One of the non-profit organizations your Friendly Bean Counter is proud to support is the Katie Adamson Conservation Fund (KACF).

This group is doing amazing things all over the world to help save endangered animals, and to support the people worldwide who understand this crucial “conservation imperative.”
Here’s an example: The clouded leopard, or “cloudie,” is highly endangered. So KACF sponsors an event, “Climbing For Cloudies,” during which funds are raised to help this valuable animal survive extinction.

If you’ve ever seen a baby cloudie, on TV or in a photograph, you’d have to admit it’s one of the cutest critters you’ll ever see! Cloudies love to climb, so the “climbing” fundraiser is thematic as well as vitally important to the survival of the species.

Also, KACF is currently working hard to raise $17,500 for a fresh water project in Tanzania. We take fresh water for granted here in the U.S., but in this struggling third-world country, fresh water is a godsend.

Just think: If you donated $175 to KACF’s Tanzania water project, YOU could be one percent of the solution!

So if you’re thirsting for a way to really make a difference in the world, go to the KACF website:

https://www.katieadamsonconservationfund.org/

And click the green “DONATE” button. You can specify which great cause you’d like to support, or simply offer a general contribution to this worthy Denver-based organization.

Cloudies and thirsty people all over the world thank you!
